Day 9

The Gift of Senior Adults

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.

Proverbs 16:31

They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green.

Psalm 92:14

Senior adults embody the richness of God's blessings within our church. Present in every facet of our ministries, they stand as living testaments to the unwavering faithfulness and loving-kindness of the Lord throughout generations. These seasoned believers, adorned with the beauty of white and grey hairs, are our biological and spiritual parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. They know God’s Word to be true because they have repeatedly watched it proven faithful.

Proverbs 16:31 and Psalm 92:14 remind us of the intrinsic value found in years of righteous obedience to the Lord and His commands. While we can give thanks for youthfulness, we have been called to honor our seniors, recognizing their depth of wisdom, celebrating their demonstrated faithfulness, and trusting God’s promise of continued fruitfulness, especially as we seek to accomplish our mission in this community.

In this season, senior adults must often navigate a life marked by transitions and change. Whether assisting their adult children, learning new technologies, managing health challenges, or adapting to new communities, they confront new and unique circumstances that can often create new challenges. As we embark on a new year, thank God for the precious gift of senior adults and pray for them as they navigate these new seasons of life. Treasure their wisdom and applaud their enduring commitment to serve. Pray that God might use you as an instrument of love and encouragement in their lives.

Application: In our reflections, let us not forget that if the Lord's wills, we, too, will join the esteemed ranks of the senior adult population. May we purposefully live our lives in righteousness, aspiring to be fruitful so that when our grey hairs emerge, they will be our crown of glory, a testament to a life lived in devotion to the Lord.
