Day 14

God is Good

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

Psalm 34:8

The goodness of God is more than just an attribute.

Often, when thinking about what goodness is, one might consider a dictionary definition or possibly a feeling felt when experiencing something good. The dictionary defines goodness as, “the quality of being morally good or virtuous; a belief in the basic goodness of mankind.” However, to try to understand the goodness of God, it will require more than a book definition to completely grasp. Understanding God’s goodness is best known through experiencing it as seen from the words of David, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” (Psalm 34:8).

The concept of goodness, particularly as it applies to God, transcends human definitions and limitations. In our experience, goodness is often subjective, influenced by cultural, societal, and personal perspectives. However, God's goodness is absolute and unchanging, as stated in the Scriptures, “God is love” (1 John 4:8)—love being the highest expression of goodness. This divine love manifests in various forms: mercy, grace, justice, and compassion. God’s goodness is the foundation upon which He governs the universe, ensuring that His will ultimately leads to flourishing and restoration.

In examining the goodness of God, we can look at the creation itself. The universe reflects His creativity and purpose. From the intricate balance of ecosystems to the majesty of celestial bodies, creation is a testament to God’s benevolent nature. Each aspect of the natural world speaks to His desire for beauty and order. Moreover, humanity, made in His image, is equipped with the inherent ability to express and recognize goodness.

Despite the presence of suffering and evil in the world, the goodness of God remains a consistent promise. The paradox of a benevolent deity existing alongside pain can be challenging to comprehend. However, it is crucial to understand that God’s goodness does not eliminate the existence of suffering; rather, it provides a framework for hope and redemption within it. In moments of despair, believers often find peace and comfort in the assurance that God is present and working towards the greater good.

The life and teachings of Jesus Christ exemplify the goodness of God in action. Through His ministry, Christ displayed compassion towards the marginalized, challenged injustices, and offered forgiveness to the repentant. His sacrificial love culminated in the ultimate act of goodness—laying down His life for humanity. This act not only showcases divine love, but also opens the door for believers to experience a personal relationship with God. In Christ, we see the perfect embodiment of goodness, who invites us to partake in divine life and purpose.

Ultimately, the goodness of God calls us not only to recognize His nature but also to emulate it. As we engage with the world, we are encouraged to reflect the goodness we have received and extend it to others. By doing as Micah tells Israel, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8), and by doing so, we become instruments of His goodness in a world desperate for hope.

The goodness of God is a central theme in understanding His nature and our relationship with Him. In a world mixed with light and darkness, the assurance of His goodness remains a guiding light, inviting us to trust and engage in the goodness that is found in His very being.

FURTHER REFLECTION:

  • Do you struggle to see goodness in the world? Ask God to reveal His goodness to you when you pray. Ask Him to remind you of all the ways He has been good to you.

  • Make a list of all the areas in your life where God has been good to you. Add to that list and use it to be thankful when praying.

PRAYER:
Dear God, help me to see your goodness in all things. Help me to be aware of how good you are to me and how personal your love is for me. Help me to remember all the ways you have been so kind and good to me. Help me to trust you and know that you are good, even when I fail to see it or am blinded by my circumstances. Thank you, Lord, for Your never-ending, never-failing goodness. Amen.
