Day 4

God is Omniscient

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways, even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.”

Psalm 139:1-6

It’s usually the kid sitting in the front desk at the front of the room - the one who raises his hand after the teacher says, “Does anyone have questions?” Or perhaps it is the girl who blurts out answers, not giving anyone else the opportunity to shine in intellectual brilliance – not that anyone really wanted to seize the moment. It might even be the friend who tells you with great enthusiasm that this is how you should live your life, also known as the person who seems to be the true, self-proclaimed “Know-It-All.” We realize that’s not the case. Even the National Merit Scholar or those with the highest of IQs are still limited and finite, incapable of escaping their humanity.

Yet, there is One who is all-knowing, able to perceive, understand, and who comprehends all things, at all times. Creator God knows all the ins and outs of His creation. He put thought and purpose into its blueprint – a masterpiece crafted with meaningful intentionality, carved and molded to bring Him glory and reflect His goodness.

God knows His created, for we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Isn’t it comforting to know that God understands us – He gets us! He hears our hearts when they break and feels the tears run down our cheeks. He crawls up into our minds when we are confused or doubt our capabilities or identity. Like the Live 360 app, we are always in His view. Nothing is hidden. Every move and thought is observed and detected from His holy position of authority. Like a couple who has been married for fifty years, before we get the first word past our lips, God already knows where we will place the end punctuation.

Remember the show, Let’s Make a Deal? Behind the three doors were prizes, and one was not so good. The contestant had to guess and make a choice. Only after the door opened, elation or disappointment ensued. God knows what’s behind the door. When we can’t see, He reads with 20/20 vision. When we don’t have the answer, He knows it. When things don’t make sense, He says, “Trust Me.” Our minds cannot begin to fathom this amazing attribute of God; He knows the final destination and outcome before we even take the first step.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be omniscient? Wouldn’t decisions be incredibly easier to make if we knew the end result? To know the outcome of an illness or if treatments were going to work? We can’t; it’s impossible. It’s reserved for only God.

But here’s the great thing…we can walk by faith, not by sight, with the One who is all-knowing, trusting in God who holds us in the palm of His mighty hand. We keep close to Him, abide in Him, and walk in His ways. With persistent fervor, we continue to ask, seek, and knock.

FURTHER REFLECTION:

  • Consider prayer journaling, penning your prayers and asking God to reveal His purpose, plan, and answers. You will get to look back on these and see the amazing faithfulness of God.

  • Will you truly trust Him with the unknowns of your life? Let Go and Let God!

PRAYER:

God, I place my confidence and dependence upon You, the Author and Perfector of my faith. I am incapable of seeing like You see or knowing as You know. I will not lean upon my own understanding, yet I will trust You in all things, giving You all the glory, honor, and praise!
